In high school, I got my first membership to a full-blown hard core bodybuilding gym and it quickly became THE hangout-place. This was late 1980’s, the gym owner promoted a big IFBB event – an amateur Universe Contest.

All the best amateur bodybuilders from all over the world had come to prepare, train and compete in my gym!! This is when I first experienced what I now refer to as F.I.R.E (Focused Intense Resistance Exercise).

These Pro’s were on another level, totally – they were rock-hard, ripped & vascular. We were skinny, eager teenagers so intimidated we dare not speak or disturb these demi gods in any way – it was kind of like being in one of those cage-less zoos – we kept our distance, quietly watching the animals living, breathing… training! The longer we watched, we saw the same things time and time again….

They walked into the gym, quiet and focused. They didn’t talk much. There was no mucking around, no skylarking like us. Every rep, every set was mechanical…even the warm-up sets with light weights!! Even something as simple as arm curls seemed to require concentration like it was brain surgery.

At 47 years of age, I still use F.I.R.E. in my weekly fitness program.

These guys carried with them dog-eared training diaries as thick as a War & Peace novel. They wrote everything down!! I didn’t even see the final competition event on stage. I don’t even know who won but those guys had made an impact that has stayed with me all these years.

To improve body shape, how much you lift is important. However, the way you lift it, is even more important.

Now contrast this to the type of workouts you see today on the gym floor. Aside from the various methods of resistance exercise that rely on generating momentum and overloading joints not muscle… you have Personal trainers chatting to their “regulars” throughout workouts like it’s a morning tea social. Clients incessantly talking through every rep and set. Trainers leading their clients around the gym with that same look (where’s the next free piece of equipment???….Or, only 45 more minutes...). Most people focus on everything else while working out except the workout itself.

F.I.R.E. is more than lifting weights

Add up the time actually spent lifting weights in a workout – the actual time spent lifting and lowering the weight, for a designated amount of sets and reps it would add up to less than a handful of minutes. Total amount of work completed, probably close to 3 minutes tops!! Understand you have a very finite amount of time to initiate an effective training stimulus. And that’s all training is, a stimulus.

To improve body shape, how much you lift is important. However, the way you lift it, is even more important.

Secondly, there is a clear mind-to-muscle connection but I believe F.I.R.E. is more than that. It’s about developing an astute kinesthetic sense of movement during maximal effort. Paying attention to all sensory input, internal and external – visual and proprioceptive; the sense of the relative position of parts of the body in relation to the strength of effort being employed in movement.

MP Transformation Champions Garry McPherson in his 40's (above) and Arthur Formin in his 50's (below) illustrate the power of just one 12 week F.I.R.E. program.

F.I.R.E. is a structured resistance training that is science-based and research-proven to deliver fantastic changes in body composition and shape.  Published in the finest sports science journals in the world, my programing is shown in peer-reviewed research to deliver amazing improvements in strength, muscle and fat loss.

With F.I.R.E., everything has a purpose, every exercise, set and rep is designed to deliver the best result in the shortest possible amount of time - isn't that what training is all about?

The workout should be a place and time where every aspect has a clear purpose. Never walk into the workout environment unprepared. Learn to feel and focus the overload on the targeted muscles, every rep, every set. Sure, train with intensity but intensity needs to be structured, measured and prioritized to ensure the best chance for a result. After all, what’s the point of training the house down, only to burn out in a few weeks, fall ill or succumb to injury and miss weeks of quality training?

F.I.R.E. is a skill in the gym that is foreign to most people – it needs to be taught, developed and reinforced. Every moment has a purpose and getting the most from every moment is the sole objective. For that time, nothing else matters. The “magic” happens when you turn those great workouts into weeks, the weeks into months, year after year.

F.I.R.E.  - place your body in the correct biomechanics to overload the targeted muscles, every rep, every set

Whereas most attempts at exercise wipeout strength and body shape improvements, MP takes a science-based approach to exercise program design and construction to maximize results in health, fitness and body shape.

How do you learn F.I.R.E.? Resistance Exercise that changes and improves body shape is a skill. It comes down to knowing how to place your body in the correct biomechanics to overload the targeted muscles, every rep, every set. You can learn more in my  P.R.I.M.E for Success videos.
