I’ll never forget that conversation I had with my Professor in the very first week of my 5 year PhD program...

“So you want to complete studies with people lifting weights? To see how fast you can build muscle?...And muscle changes a person’s body shape you say?” he said sitting at his crowded desk, peering at me over his spectacles.

“yes.” I said meekly.

“How are you going to do that?!”

“huh?”

“This will need to go through and be passed by the University's ethics committee. To do that a significant part of your PhD thesis will be a rational of every aspect of the program.... the exercises chosen, how they will be performed, what order and why.... The safety and effectiveness of every aspect needs to be clear... you’ll need to compile a science-based protocol for the warm up each workout... why you are prescribing the number of sets and repetitions selected for each workout. This needs to be a clarified and approved before you can even start working with people...."
