Like it or not, the reality of today’s modern lifestyle, is that most people can afford to devote an hour or less to physical exercise 3-6 times a week. Here lies the conundrum. More people are exercising but we are unhealthier and fatter than ever before in human history, and it’s getting worse every year.

The cause of the problem....

The reason why most people don’t get the results they so desperately desire is, they view exercise the wrong way. They don’t really understand the role exercise has to play in the modern lifestyle. Let me explain.

Exercise Physiologist know the most intense exercise only burns around 10 calories – a minute! For most people, that means a rigorous, hour-long workout will only burn around 250-500 calories. Now consider that just one hamburger ‘n’ fries can easily contain over 900 calories. That’s one meal. You can start to see where many people get it wrong – they attempt to use exercise as a trade off, a means to burn off excess calorie consumption.

Have you noticed that your gym is always the most crowded on Monday evening?

It’s a feeble attempt to burn off the weekends indulgences. It doesn’t work. To complicate matters, the wrong information about exercise is perpetuated by fitness professionals.

Firstly, most fitness experts recommend that as soon as a person can perform physical activity for 20 minutes, they should increase it to 30 minutes, then 40 minutes, then 60. That is, to achieve improvements, as soon as they can complete ‘x’ amount of time ‘comfortably’ the individual should increase the duration. My question is “why?

What’s the objective, to exercise for as long as you can every single workout?

Who really wants to spend more and more of their day exercising?

How sustainable is that?

Here’s another piece of misinformation that really amazes me......

Some experts recommend that you have to perform exercise for ‘x’ amount of time, to ‘tap’ into fat stores and burn body fat. This misinformation originates from respiratory quotient studies on fuel utilization during exercise, and it’s totally misleading. The data has been taken completely out of context by people that don’t know how to apply research-based information. With regards to promoting efficient, effective results from exercise, this information is dead wrong, it’s not even close to being right.

Hopefully, you agree with me that firstly, the objective of your program is not to exercise for as long as possible.

Secondly, most people today are doing well if they can commit to 3-6 hours a week of physical exercise.
